About Bøjden Nor

The south west corner of Funen (Fyn) hides a real treasure of a shore dive. Bøjden Nor lies 15km west of Faaborg and this fact alone means that this spot is rarely visited by divers, and only in exception circumstances will you meet other divers here. You will not be able to boast of diving to any great depth when diving here, but fortunately it is not always depth that determines the quality of a shore dive. On the other hand Bøjden Nor is a great spot to choose if you have both scuba divers and snorkelers in your group. Visibility is usually the best is the wind is in the east.

You can find masses of marine life all over this dive site, and you can already start diving 5m offshore, as the water quickly reaches a depth of two to three meters. Please take care when you enter the water as the stones close to the waters edge can be slippery and somewhat treacherous.

A typical dive here starts by setting off at a 90 degree course from the beach and at once the varied nature of this site starts opening up before your eyes. You first swim over a sandy bottom with eel grass, which in places is broken up by patches of gravel and seaweed. Already here you will find plenty of life, and you constantly find yourself stopping to take a close look. In the transition zone between sand and gravel you will often see flatfish, not just the usual flounders, but you might also see turbot and plaice. In the next zone you come to you will find larger stones with scattered areas of seaweed mixed with eel grass, and if you enjoy macro photography or looking at underwater plants, your speed will slow right down.

Here, particularly in the summer, you will find all the life that makes it’s home in the shallow waters around Denmark. The large numbers of shrimps, especially in the evening, attract sea trout and cod close to the shore. This makes an evening or night dive here a very attractive proposition.

Once you have reached a little way offshore, as far out as the outmost of the wooden stakes used to tether fishing nets, set your course back inland, following the line of these wooden poles. These structures provide a degree of shelter for small fish and animals, while the larger stones are home to crabs, shrimps, gobies, garfish fry and many other creatures.

When you finally come ashore after your dive, and you find your tummy rumbling, then Bøjden Nor is the perfect place to cook a meal over a bonfire or barbecue. A diving trip here in July or August will often involve two dives, one of them an evening dive. While you sit around a bonfire, enjoying your grilled food and degassing between dives, you will be able to follow the ferry to Fynshav sailing far offshore to the south.
